Red Cross “Sound the Alarm” Smoke Alarm Event

On August 14th, two people lost their lives in a house fire in Norton, VA in the Esserville community, one of whom was a 13 year old child. In response to this tragedy, the Red Cross is partnering with my agency, the Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office, to hold a “Sound the Alarm” event in the Esserville (Norton) and Southern (Big Stone Gap) neighborhoods on Saturday, September 17th. These events consist of a team of volunteers from public entities and the community, performing installation of free smoke alarms for residents who have none. Sharon Dixon with the Red Cross and I have been busy recruiting volunteers to perform smoke alarm installations and soliciting donations for food to feed the volunteer staff breakfast and lunch meals.

You can find out more details about the Sound the Alarm events here:

Sound The Alarm – Save a Life | Red Cross

1,300 lives have been saved with this program since its inception, with 24 of them being Virginia residents.

Some of you have already graciously agreed to provide volunteers, food, or help otherwise. In order to ensure the event is successful, we will be having several Google Meet web conferencing progress meetings between now and the 17th. Our next meeting is planned for next Tuesday, the 13th, and I would love for everyone to set a few minutes aside to attend. Communication between communities and agencies will be beneficial to all involved. If anyone has a suggestion for persons who should be invited to Tuesday’s progress meeting, please feel free to let me know quickly, and I will add them to the invite list.

Attached are two flyers for the event: one to inform the residents of the events, and one to recruit volunteers. Please feel free to print, email, or distribute these flyers via your agency/locality’s social media outlets as you see fit.

Please feel free to contact me or Sharon Dixon at if you have any questions.

Best regards,
