Lonesome Pine yarnworks
About The Artist
Raised in the mountains of Southwest Virginia on the Trail of the Lonesome Pine, Sherry and
Teri Necessary (later Corrigan and Turner) learned to love artisan crafts from an early age. Deep
in the Appalachians near Carter Fold, where the Carter Family honed their mountain sound, the
Necessary girls learned to crochet, knit and craft under the watchful eye of grandparents. Life
happened and the girls left the mountains to explore other pursuits, Sherry became a nurse,
then Nurse Practitioner, while chasing the dream of becoming a country singing superstar. Teri
worked in the school system for 23 years and raised a family, however the old adage is true:
You can take the girl out of the mountains, but you can’t take the mountains out of the girl. Life
events eventually drew both girls back to tiny Big Stone Gap and the dream of starting their
own business was born. Lonesome Pine Yarnworks pays homage to their beloved home in the
mountains and strives to keep artisan fiber arts alive through teaching, spinning, weaving,
knitting and crocheting, demonstrating and making socks on a vintage 1917 cast iron sock
machine, and hand-dyeing yarn in small batches. Using local landmarks and God’s providence
for inspiration, the sisters have grown their collection to 33 colorways….and counting!
