LTC Richard Dan Hill is a native of Big Stone Gap, Virginia. He graduated from Powell Valley High School in 1963. He then graduated from Georgetown College, Kentucky in 1967 with a BA in Political Science and History. He earned his MBA degree from Michigan State University in 1974. He earned his commission through the Army Engineer Officer Candidate School. Colonel Hill graduated from the Army’s Command and General Staff College and the Defense Systems Management College as well. Among his decorations are the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement medal, and others.
Following his retirement from active duty in 1991, he began a career in civilian industry as Director of Worldwide Military Sales for AMF Bowling Products and retired again in 2007 to Gwynn’s Island , Virginia.

The book is an autobiographical narrative of my career, but the emphasis is not on me, but on the people that I was so fortunate to serve with. Much of the book is humorous. The things that young soldiers, away from home for the first time, with a little income, often in a foreign country, can do is mind-boggling. I tell stories about young soldiers in Germany who do some of the most unforgettable stunts, to soldiers in Vietnam who develop a sure-fire preventative for venereal disease, to a soldier who sells “grass” to make a little extra spending cash at Ft. Eustis, Virginia to the civilian employee who brings the first skunk to Korea. All of these stories are true and happened just as in the book with names changed.
