Trip 1 – Big Stone Gap – The Movie

Beloved by millions of readers around the world Adriana Trigiani has helped make her hometown of Big Stone Gap famous through her incredible books about the town. The New York Times bestselling author has written 18 books, both fiction and non-fiction, and brought her debut novel “Big Stone Gap” to the big screen in 2015. Starring Ashley Judd, Patrick Wilson, and Whoopie Goldberg, the movie, which she wrote and directed, ended the year as the second most viewed romantic comedy of the year.

The biggest star of the movie, however, was Big Stone Gap itself. Filmed totally on location in the quaint, Victorian-era town, Big Stone Gap is all about love, life, and the incredible beauty of Southwest Virginia.

Visitors have flocked to Big Stone Gap since the movie’s release searching out various locations, such as Mutual’s Pharmacy (now Curklin’s), The Bookmobile, the Drama Stage, and Carmine’s (now the Visitor Center), which were featured prominently in the film. A visit can also include a stay at charming Poplar Hill Cottage, a wonderful three-bedroom getaway, the Carousel House Bed and BreakfastCountry Inn or Quality Inn.

If your trip to Big Stone Gap is June through August, you can enjoy a live performance of the Trail of the Lonesome Pine, the official outdoor drama of Virginia, which is also featured in the movie. Other great stops during your trip might include Mountain Rose Vineyard and the Central Drive In Theater, a throwback to the 1950s and ‘60s, when drive in theaters were popular.
