First Day Hike – Southwest Va Museum.
Start the new year on the right foot with the Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park’s annual First Day Hike on January 1 at 1 p.m.
Join Park rangers and volunteers at the Powell River Trail trailhead in Appalachia, Virginia, for a scenic and educational walk through one of the most biodiverse river valleys in the country. The Powell River, second only to the Clinch River in biodiversity, offers a rich blend of natural beauty and fascinating local history.
This moderate 2.4-mile hike (round trip) is expected to last about an hour. Along the way, you’ll discover stories of wildlife, ecology, and the people who’ve called this region home.
Guests are asked to wear appropriate shoes and clothing for the weather. In the event of inclement weather, the hike will be canceled.
Participants will receive a 2026 First Day Hike Sticker to take home.
Registration is not required for this program. For more information, please call the park at 276-523-1322.
